Thistle Globe Paperweight

Challenged by a friend to encapsulate a dandelion seed head in resin, Barry Needham created a technique 1968 that has been carried on to this day by his brother Alan. Clear polyester resin, containing a UV filter to stop fading, is used to embed botanical specimens locally sourced in Hafod Farm, Wales. The globe shape allows the specimen to be seen in its beauty from all angles. The brothers were awarded the Prince of Wales Shield in 1975 for quality crafts in Wales. This one contains a thistle, or Cirsium vulgare, one of eighteen or so species native to Great Britain and adopted by the Stewart Kings of Scotland.
